The Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra was founded in 1847 with an original devotion to ballet and opera. Today it exists as a symphony orchestra and averages about ninety performances a year. Generally, the schedule includes three performances a week and these are varied in themes and styles specifics. The symphony has a stable support base and receives about 10,000 subscriptions per year with approximately 145,000 total audience members.
Jane was reading this information in the brochure she picked up in one of the 5 star Barcelona hotels. She was there for four nights and five days because of a prize she won at work. Unfortunately, her best friend Carol became extremely sick the day before they were to leave and she couldn’t go. It was too late to make any alternative plans so always being the trouper Jane decided she would go alone. And now there she was, in this beautiful and incredible global city deciding what she would do that evening and she had no one to do it with. This was an odd situation for Jane to find herself in. She had been craving the opportunity to be by herself for sometime and had often fantasized about running off somewhere all by herself. Well, there she was, all by herself in a big city.
So, she decided to pretend that she was actually on that escape trip that she had fantasized about and left the hotel to take a walk through Old Town Barcelona. She was absolutely stunned by the architecture and the historic atmosphere. She also found it somewhat humbling to be standing there on that old street with these great buildings that have been there for centuries and would be there long after she had come and gone. It also gave her a strange sense of freedom and liberty. Jane enjoyed some tapas and a Mahou. Later she walked by the Picasso Museum and decided she should bring Carol a souvenir so she thought about buying her a print of Picasso’s masterpiece Guernica, even though that actual painting isn’t at the museum. On second thought she decided on a print of The Old Guitarist, which she thought Carol would like better.
