It’s certainly one of the toughest professions, and just might be the very toughest in all of show business. Comedy is hard, so the saying goes. Making a living as a comic is close to impossible. But in a city as competitive as New York, the idea of impossibility is often taken on as a challenge. There are thousands of young people coming every year to prove that the impossible might be a reality for them. It’s a tough business, and it’s a tough city to try to prove the impossible, but for the rest of the visitors and the New Yorkers, this combination makes for some wonderful nights out.
New York Comedy Clubs have a reputation for being some of the finest in the world. Great comic minds from all over come to try out their latest material in front of audiences. Sometimes the audiences are very receptive, and sometimes they’re incredibly critical, heckling the comics in the middle of their acts. However, both of those situations can be like golden opportunities for a comic who has some skill. A great crowd can be made even sweeter by matching their energy with an infusion of comic ability. And a tough crowd can be a great challenge, especially if they’re verbal. If they’re talking, it means they’re awake, and that’s usually just enough for most comics to work their way in, and eventually win them over.
The most difficult situation for any comedian is a crowd that doesn’t respond at all. This is where that sinking feeling starts to come in, and there’s a reason why they call it bombing. It’s painful for both the audience and the performer, and the best rule here is to do the minutes required and get off the stage, and learn from the experience.
Most of the city’s comedy clubs offer a pretty magnificent evening ahead, however. Out of town guests usually get a thrill when they come to the club from their New York hotels and see familiar faces and fresh young talent. This is the crucible for comedy, and right now is the middle of a very strong new wave, and the time is definitely right in New York City.
