Linking for Search Engine Optimization

Posted by Dalia

Search Engine Optimization or SEO can feel complicated for many beginners. For some people all they know is that they need incoming links and will then turn to bad SEO methods such as reciprocal linking to get these links. There are other types of links you can get though, so be on the look out for opportunities to get your website known on websites related to your own that fall in these categories.

Article directories can be useful, esp. if you can really write quality content. If it is high quality, people will want to use it on their own sites. This will mean that your link or two back to your website will also be posted on each of their websites. The more people who like the article, the more people are likely to see it. That is how these sorts of things spread. If you make one of these into a piece of link bait (an article that people like to share with others) you could see exponential increase in your links and incoming traffic.

Find a .edu or .org site that fits in your category and offer to write some content for them. Ask that the payment you get in return is a link back to your website. These alternative websites are magic for most keywords and are usually considered very important in search engine algorithms.

Get into popular websites. Getting links from popular websites can be hard but it worth it. You can always offer to write some content for them, or just network with them. Getting these kinds of links are usually the product of really being able to sell yourself, and the payoff is more than worth it.

There are other options besides links though. Talk to an SEO company which will have various techniques and can use an advanced SEO tool that will help them improve your website’s ranking. Sometimes they can help for less than you think.

Google’s recent Mayday update needs to be taken into account when doing SEO for the new Google. There is much talk about the shift from authority sites with age and links to quality and relevancy signals being more important. It will take some time for this theory to be proven. However, it has become more and more important to get links from diverse sources. A link from an ‘authority’ site may no longer have the value it used to have.
