With names like Natalie Imbruglia, Rick Springfield, and Michael Hutchence, there’s plenty of evidence that New South Wales has a fair share of talented musicians who are native here. There also seems to be something rather potent in the soil as well, because gorgeousness just seems to be part of the package. While it seems as though they had a sudden rise in talented performers in the 80s, at least to the rest of the world, to Australians it was just to be expected. MTV had a lot to do with shifting the focus from one country to several, and New South Wales made itself a part of the everyday consciousness.

Whatever remnants of the past decade’s music scene, the music in New South Wales today is a very electric phenomenon. Building on a rather steady reputation for producing great music, as well as maintaining a steady base of local fans who could appreciate it, it’s something that’s constantly in evolution, and always worth listening to. A short visit here can only reveal a small piece of the puzzle, and chances are rather high that the puzzle will be completely different at every return, but it’s still an immense pleasure to try and track what’s happening here.

In light of the subcultures here, and where there ears are tuned, it seems apparent that the indie scene is still running very hot in terms of New South Wales’ contemporary music , and that people are living in a very pronounced minimalist music world. The lessons of that great moment that peaked when it began at the end of the 70s are learned to a large degree, and sensible new artists are learning to face their own talents and demons with equal parts courage, grace, and endurance. It’s good news for the rest of the population.

Visitors can emphasize the loveliness of a stay here, by adding at least one night out to hear some of the live local sounds before retiring to their New South Wales hotel . With a little bit of research, talking to the folks at the record shop, or checking out a local zine, and a little bit of adventure, there are plenty of new sounds here, playing every night, and resonating all over the world.

The Bay area is a rich place to visit, and a rather nice place to live, too. There are many local cultures who make up the city, bringing traditions and customs together that make for some rather lovely and lively evenings. Particularly in the music, one can hear all sorts of Latin rhythms and polyrhythms, and the club scene is exciting and eclectic. This means that have a room booked at a hotel in Orlando can be a passport for lots of late-night fun. There are also plenty of excellent restaurants and local galleries to fill in the rest of the bill for a good time on the town.

When it comes to live music, Orlando has a lot to offer. There are plenty of clubs and bars that cater to all sorts of tastes, and chances are pretty good that you’ll find tastes of what you’re looking for. But one of the best things about seeing live music here is that it’s also helping to support a local scene that has ups and downs, and being part of it can help to further the cause in making it something exceptional. The ingredients are all here, but it needs some boosting to get completely off the ground.

However, that’s not to say that there is no music scene in Orlando , because there certainly is. The city, however, has always had a rough time sustaining itself in this regard. Perhaps it is because of a kind of sense that things are transitory here, and the tourism industry is so strong that it almost feels like the whole city is just on vacation. Despite the circumstances, however, there are lots of local acts that are doing very interesting work. Alternative rock, Latin, and electronic music are all part of a scene that is growing and developing, perhaps in spite of itself.

With places like the Social , locals and visitors have plenty of opportunities to see a host of excellent live acts, playing a multitude of genres, including experimental, funk, hiphop, punk, and all with a great sense of style. And local bars like Will’s Pub are more focused on local acts, and the atmosphere is easy and laid-back, with a crowd ready to dive in when the music swells. There are also lots of Latin clubs that will occasionally feature live music to supplement the dj work, which is excellent. It’s certainly here, then, the seeds and the talent for a thriving music scene, and maybe it’s happening already, but no one wants to admit it yet.

Anyone who goes to a club is looking for something. Usually it’s something very particular, and usually is exactly what everyone thinks it is, and that’s a good thing. Because it’s easier to meet people knowing that everyone’s there for the same reason, or reasons. The chance to meet the perfect someone is always on the front of the brain, but the same brain often lets you know that it’s a slim chance, so better come up with some other ideas. In that moment, drinking, dancing, and hanging out with friends becomes the theme of the evening, and it’s a great way to spend time anywhere.

Visiting London, the game is still the same. Clubs are clubs wherever anyone might go, and none have an edge over another for getting people out of their instincts. They’re driven by instinct, in fact, because the beats per minute are designed to open up the animal nature in everyone. In London, however, the science of the beat is a little more refined, because this is one of the central cities where it all began. This is all to say that London club culture is very sophisticated.

At its best, it is very open, engaging, and keen on allowing people to have the chance to be themselves, while maintaining a sense of fashion and common cultural precision. Places like After Skool Klub are the height of this notion. It’s all 18 and over, and there is a pretty modest fee of only 7 pounds to get in. There are a number of discounts available, too, so look into that before paying the full cost. Here the atmosphere is very accepting, as long as the tastes aren’t too pedestrian. Death Disco at Nottinghill Arts Club is another local scene that’s very hip, and pretty open to new ideas in music and fashion. Be brave and daring at all costs.

The Forbidden London guides also have some excellent suggestions, but these are often the upscale clubs where it’s nothing to spend hundreds of pounds a night, and make a show of how easy it is to spend. In certain circumstances, it’s a lot of fun, but the guest list and the scrutiny at the door might keep people away, looking for the real London crowds. They all add up to good reasons to spend time away from the London hotel room and get out into the streets to see what the city does after dark.

As one of the larger financial centers for all of Europe, Geneva is a city that attracts a rather broad array of visitors every year. Some come to do business, of course, but the rest come to enjoy the hotel accommodations and all that the city has to offer. The locals are very cosmopolitan, and pretty well-versed in world history as well as world culture, and they tend to like outdoor activities, taking advantage of the temperate weather here. Winters are typically snowy, and skiing is a prime attraction here, and the rest of the time there is a potpourri of choices. Because of the cultured population, music festivals are at a premium, and for live music, it’s hard to beat.

Geneva’s Fete de la Musique is one of the big events in the city, and is also a major music festival for the rest of the world. Those fortunate enough to be traveling here in June can enjoy a three-day music festival that is one of the largest in the world. It truly has something for everyone, with 50 stages that have a constantly-rotating lineup of everything under the sun, from classical to hiphop. There are plenty of local acts, along with some stunning international acts that represent the best in their genre. Plan on using the city’s public transport during this time, since the roads are blocked off to make room for the music and the crowds.

For the more esoteric tastes, there is the Akouphene festival , which happens for four days in September. Here, the focus is on music that crosses over into other genres, from Brutism rock, experimental, and noise rock, and way, way beyond. This is one of the most exciting festivals for those who are deep into the eclectic, and have a taste for the ultimate in modern. European art tastes tend toward the remix and mash-up these days, and these new genres are some of the most exciting experiments from young and adventurous world musicians.

Those who like performance mixed in with their live music should try to attend the La Batie Festival. The focus here is more theatrically-based, with a big emphasis on the visual arts. Again, this is something that represents contemporary trends for mixing genre and playing with form, and demonstrates some of the best artistic minds working today.

There is plenty more where this came from, and those looking to discover the music scene in Geneva don’t have to wait for festivals. Live music is heard in clubs, pubs, and performance spaces all around town.

I must admit I had never heard of this group, Owl City, before this week; however, after hearing their song Vanilla Twilight I fell in love. They have a unique contemporary sound that is great for just driving down the road with the windows down enjoying the day. Not surprisingly, this isn’t their only hit. The song Fireflies has also topped the charts internationally. Listen here for more of this fresh group.

If you have been staying at a great hotel like this and you have been to all the crowded attractions like a whole day just to visit Alcatraz and spend time on the Fisherman’s Wharf. Maybe you caught a comedy show and now you want a day to stroll one of San Franciscos unique neighborhoods how about Haight Ashbury district. It is named after the famous intersection it resides on and its nickname is The haight. The Streets were originally named after Henry Haight at pioneer, exchange broker as well as tenth governor of California and Munroe Ashbury who was an early politician of San Francisco who was on the S.F. Board of Supervisors between 1964 and 1870. Munroe Ashbury was Henry Haight’s nephew and they both helped develop the neighborhood.

There are two parts to the neighborhood the upper Haight and lower Haight because of there height on the hill. The lower section was originally an area of African American and Japanese residents. The upper Haight district is the one that is famous for its part in the hippie movement in the sixties. It all started when students and artists couldn’t find affordable housing in most parts of the city so they took over Haight street where there was cheap rent. The neighborhood was actually quiet before they came along.

Today there are many shops and restaurants to visit and thing are a little more main stream than it was back in the sixties but it still holds much of its charm and has many great old buildings to see. Come and see some of the vibe that contributed to another name is was called by Journalist, Hunter S. Thompson, which was Hashbury because it was. Come see the trail left behind by bands like the Greatful Dead, Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company and Jefferson Airplane.

One of the most important life lessons Ben has learned in his nineteen years of existence he learned while visiting Perth, Australia. He visited the city with his family when he was seventeen years old and ready to begin his junior year of high school. At that point in his life Ben was considering what school he should go to after he graduated. He wasn’t sure if he should audition for a conservatory or go to one of the universities that was highly known for its music program. At that point in his life Ben was trying to determine if he should go to Eastman School of Music, Northwestern University, Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music. He had heard extremely positive comments about his playing and had loved the violin since he was four years old. At this point Ben wanted to get into the best school he could and did not believe in default options, so he was simply going to go for the gold, as soon as he could determine which one it was.

The summer he was seventeen he was feeling particularly anxious about selecting his school and really did not want to go with his family on their yearly vacation. However, his parents insisted that this may be the last trip they all got to take together and insisted that he go and stay with them in one of the hotels Perth. Ben decided that since he had to go he would make the best of it but insisted that he be allowed to rent a violin while they were there so he wouldn’t miss practicing. His parents agreed and one of the first stops they made after arriving in Perth was at the W.A. Piano & Music Co. where they were able to hire a nice violin for Ben to play while they were there. Interestingly, he became involved in a conversation with one of the violin instructors who asked Ben his intentions after high school. Ben relayed his college choice dilemma and the instructor kindly looked at him and told him there was no such thing as the best school. He then explained his statement by saying that there was simply the best school and teacher for a particular student and that Ben needed to base his decision on his interactions with the instructors. Ben thought back on this family trip and that incredible advice he had been given as he sat in his dorm room at the best possible school he could have chosen and warmed up for his lesson with the best possible teacher.
